What Constitutes a Dental Emergency? Common dental emergencies involves acute pain related to your teeth, gums and supporting bones. Some examples include teeth that are knocked out, loosened, broken, fractured or forced out of position. Cuts to your gums, lips or cheeks during an injury may also be treated by your dentist.
Sudden loss of a dental restoration or prosthesis that makes it difficult to eat or that presents a cosmetic concern can be considered an emergency as well, even though you are not in pain. Other situations such as objects caught between the teeth may also be serious enough to warrant a call to the dentist as well.
While dental emergencies are rarely medical emergencies since there is no threat to life, if you have a medical emergency, you should go to your nearest emergency room or call 911 immediately.
